FAQs

Q. What is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)?

A. Osteopaths (D.O.s) are doctors who take a very proactive approach in the overall wellness of their patients. In addition to treating immediate problems, we are always considering the big picture of your ongoing wellness, looking for ways to prevent illness in the future. We pay particular attention to your entire personal situation, which includes your emotional state as well as your physical symptoms. D.O.s are specifically trained to take a more holistic approach, evaluating personal health risks—such as smoking, high blood pressure, excessive cholesterol levels, stress and other lifestyle factors —with an understanding of how they all interrelate. In coordination with prescription of appropriate medical treatment, we help teach patients how to take more responsibility for their wellbeing and to change un-healthy life patterns.

Q. How is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) like a Medical Doctor (M.D.)?

A. D.O.s and M.D.s are both fully qualified physicians licensed to prescribe medication and perform surgery:

  • • Both complete four years of basic medical education, typically after earning four-year undergraduate degrees with an emphasis on scientific courses.
  • • After medical school, both obtain graduate medical education through internships and residencies. This training typically lasts three to six years and prepares for practice of specialties.
  • • Both can choose to practice in any specialty area of medicine, including pediatrics, family practice, psychiatry, surgery or obstetrics.
  • • Both must pass comparable examinations to obtain state licenses.
  • • Both practice in fully accredited and licensed health care facilities.
  • • Both enhance the state of health care in America.
